Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
It's impossible, of course, to compile the "essential" works of any great composer on two CDs. Tchaikovsky wrote prolifically throughout his life, and a large proportion of his pieces are in the standard repertory. Nevertheless, this collection gives a fairly broad overview of the composer's style, offering famous excerpts from his symphonies, concertos, and ballets, as well as chamber works, piano solos, songs, and choral settings. Nevertheless, this collection gives a fairly broad overview of the composer's style, offering famous excerpts from his symphonies, concertos, and ballets, as well as chamber works, piano solos, songs, and choral settings. Some highlights: a delicious sampler from The Nutcracker, a powerful account of the slow movement from the Fifth Symphony, and an elegantly lyrical Adagio from the Souvenir de Florence for strings. The only aspect of his work that's really missing here is his operas, though we do get two terrific orchestral selections from Eugene Onegin. All in all, the performances are first-rate and feature top soloists, conductors, and orchestras, including Herbert von Karajan, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Neville Marriner, Charles Dutoit, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Think of Essential Tchaivkovsky as a tasting menu, one that will likely inspire you to try full courses!
