Very Good Resource for GRE Students

I have been conducting SAT and GRE workshops for over 5 years. I recently began using this book in my classes. I like Essential Words for the GRE because it doesn¿t use unrealistically simple sentences to teach the words, like a lot of vocabulary books do. This means students get practice in reading academic subject matter similar to what they¿ll find in the actual GRE. I¿ve used many prep books from many publishers and they all contain quite a few errors in their exercises. I have found a few in this book, but considering the thousands of exercises it is pretty error-free.

Excellent vocabulary book for the GRE

I am an engineering major preparing for the GRE. My vocabulary is pretty rusty because I've been concentrating on math and engineering over the past two years. I studied using big lists of word, but I found that I wasn't remembering the words very well, So, I decided to try this book. What I like is that it shows you how the words are used on the actual test. As I worked through the book, I found I was remembering a pretty high percentage of the words. I recommend this book if you want a no nonsense approach to improving your vocabulary for the GRE. It does demand quite a bit of work, but you will definitely improve. One more thing I like is that the sentences are usually about the sort of academic topics that appear on the GRE. This means you're not only learning the words, you're also building up your general knowledge. Anyway, good luck on the GRE!

It is good book for a beginner

This book is very helpful for any one who wants to prepare for the GRE test, gain some kind of confidence, and more vocabulary. However, those 800 words were not existed in the test that I have taken last few days. I can say only 4 out 800 words were existed in the test. I thought if I memorized all these words, especially the 300 high frequency words, I'll do great in the test, unfortunately I didn't.Anyway, it is a good book for a beginner.

    Powerful Graduate Level Vocabulary Booster

This book's excellent approach to reviewing important words for the GRE has been a great help to me. The sentences that illustrate the meaning and use of each word are sophisticated and informative, covering a range of interesting topics in the arts, sciences, and social sciences and are exactly what you'd expect to see on the real exam. At the end of each unit are exercises of a similar level that provide thorough practice in word usage and nuance. After completing all the units I took the post-test and was happy to find that my score had greatly improved since the pre-test. I highly recommend this book if you want an efficient way to master a lot of GRE vocabulary.

    A reviewer

I was surprisingly disappointed by Barron's Essential Words for the GRE. While I thought the variety of words and definitions were excellent, I felt that the exercises were lacking. Many of the sentence completion exercises were unclear or too obvious (sometimes using a different form of the word in the same sentence, thus cluing me into what the answer should be, even if I don't remember the word itself), or only able to be determined through the use of elimination in a word list. There were also a lot of obvious errors in the answer key, which is especially frustrating when scoring myself. I think that Barron's can produce something much better than this, if not by developing better sentence completion sections, at least by having a correct answer key. I give it three out of five stars, because the words and definitions are helpful, as are the word roots, but the helpfulness of the exercises and the trustworthiness of the answer key are sorely lacking.
