Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Description: This general overview of human anatomy and physiology covers each body system and includes associated information such as nutrition, development, and chemistry necessary to understand the human organism.
Purpose: The authors explicitly state the purpose is to give students enough information to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology. From that knowledge, students will be able to predict and critically analyze what will result from factors that impinge on normal structure and function. The book certainly meets this objective. It succinctly covers basic anatomy and physiology and intersperses short vignettes describing pathology related to the material covered in each chapter.
Audience: The book is intended for students who are pursuing a health-related career. Although not stated in the preface, it is apparent that it is meant for beginning students since clarity of essential and basic concepts is stressed. All of the authors are teachers of anatomy and physiology at the college level and have authored previous books on this subject..
Features: All body systems and related topics including cells, tissues, nutrition, heredity, and aging are discussed. The material is presented in a logical, clear and concise format that assists the student to understand and retain a large volume of information. Of particular value are the "Case in Point" readings that stimulate interest and the ability to link learning with the "real world." An extensive glossary is provided as well as in-depth answers to each chapter's critical thinking questions.
Assessment: This is a beautifully written basic book with numerous drawings, photos, tables, and figures that clarify concepts and relationships in anatomy and physiology. It is similar to, and in some instances exceeds, Hole's Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology, 9th edition, Shier et al. (McGraw Hill, 2006) — my personal favorite among foundational anatomy and physiology texts.
