Editorial Reviews

Donald R. Frey
This text contains descriptions of over 80 medical problems in a case presentation format. This is the second edition update of the original work published in 1993. The book is designed as a supplement to the editor's extremely popular Textbook of Family Practice, 5th Edition (WB Saunders, 1995) and is intended to illustrate the challenges encountered in day-to-day family practice. Although somewhat wordy in his approach, he clearly achieves these goals. This book is written for students and residents who are seeking to learn a family practice approach to common medical problems. The editor draws upon a number of solid authorities in compiling this work. A full spectrum of family practice problems is covered. Each topic is methodically addressed in a SOAP format, with an extensive discussion of each case-based problem. Readers seeking quick information may become somewhat impatient with the basic approach. However, students hungry to correlate medical information with day-to-day experience will find the book helpful. One disappointment is the chapter on managed care, which is authored by two industry medical executives, and carries a decidedly pro managed care bias. This is an excellent teaching tool which brings to life the most common problems encountered by family physicians. For those students and residents who have the time to read it, this book makes a fine educational supplement to standard texts.
