Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael L. Troxell, MEd, RRT (Medical College of Ohio)
Description: This first edition book provides comprehensive coverage of mechanical ventilation and ventilator concepts divided into four parts: Principles, Management, Monitoring, and Related Topics. The book has a list of several points to remember and a bibliography at the end of each of the 36 chapters.
Purpose: It is written as a practical guide to mechanical ventilation in general and not to specific equipment. There may be a few other books on this topic, but none as concise and current as this one. The authors have accomplished what they intended to do.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for all clinicians who care for adult patients on mechanical ventilation. This book would be useful for advanced respiratory care students, medical residents and interns. Hess and Kacmarek have many publications on the subject of respiratory care. As stated in the preface, the authors have over 50 years' combined experience as authors and clinicians.
Features: The graphs and diagrams are well placed to illustrate important concepts in the book. The references are very current and related to the discussion in the text. The index and table of contents are helpful. The format of the hardcover book is that of a typical health care text.
Assessment: This is an outstanding book on the topic of adult mechanical ventilation. The authors have tied together all of the current concepts and background information for the clinician preparing to care for the patient on ventilatory support. I would recommend this book for any bookstore or library that services healthcare students. Critical care nurses, respiratory care practitioners, and physicians will all benefit by reading this book.

Booknews
A practical guide to adult mechanical ventilation written for critical care and outpatient clinicians dealing with a variety of respiratory situations. Hess and Kacmarek (anaesthesia, Harvard Medical School) review the principles of mechanical ventilation, and ventilator management and monitoring in trauma and postoperative cases. The discussions also extend to airway management, positioning, sedation, paralysis, and ventilatory techniques. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
