Description: This is an update of a book that describes the practice of nuclear medicine, most of which involves imaging with radiopharmaceuticals. It describes the clinical studies, generally organized by organ system, although separate chapters cover tumor imaging and infection imaging. The book begins with a review of basic sciences in nuclear medicine, and also includes a number of unknown cases with answers. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe the current practice of nuclear medicine. This book is well organized and clearly written, and continues to serve as one of the main introductory books and resources in the field.
Audience: It is intended for use by radiology residents and nuclear medicine residents. It also serves as a useful reference for practitioners working in radiology and nuclear medicine. It has been a valuable resource since the first edition was published in 1983.
Features: The beginning review of basic sciences in nuclear medicine includes the physics of radioactivity and radionuclides. It also reviews radiopharmaceuticals and instrumentation and quality control of both. Most of the chapters discuss the clinical features of nuclear medicine studies organized by organ system, with separate chapters on tumor imaging and inflammation/infection imaging. This is an excellent review of the clinical use of radiopharmaceuticals for these studies, the clinical indications, and features of correct diagnosis. Use of radionuclides in therapy and aspects of radiation safety are also discussed. The unknown cases with answers and discussion are excellent teaching tools for residents.
Assessment: This is a high-quality introductory book in nuclear medicine that is comprehensive enough to serve as a reference for practitioners, without being too long or too detailed. Its main competitor is Nuclear Medicine: The Requisites, 3rd edition, Ziessman et al. (Mosby, 2006). This book includes revisions that reflect the significant advances in the field in the last six years.
