Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Blaze W. Cook, MD (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This text is a thorough examination of the essentials of nuclear medicine. The authors have created a reference that is concise enough to be easily accessible, yet deep enough to completely cover the various studies in nuclear medicine.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to update the previous edition (4th) while keeping to essentials and retaining affordability. This edition (5th) continues to be a concise reference for nuclear medicine imaging.
Audience: The text is primarily directed to the resident or practicing physician of nuclear medicine.
Features: The organization of the fifth edition essentially follows the same organization of the fourth edition. The text begins with an introduction to radiopharmaceuticals and their utility in imaging. Detection instrumentation and image construction are also addressed. The book continues by addressing each nuclear medicine study by organ system, concluding with a special chapter dedicated to PET. A final chapter of unknown cases is provided for self-examination.
Assessment: Much of the content of this edition is similar to the fourth edition. In many cases, the provided sample images are identical. The fifth edition is color, and graphs have been colorized. The two major additions to this edition are the chapter and additional content regarding PET and the "self-evaluation" section of unknown cases.
From the Publisher
"Well organized, understandable, and a quick read, this text is an excellent resource... The book is very affordable, especially considering its value in everyday practice."

This is the fourth edition of what has become a modern classic textbook of general nuclear medicine. According to the authors, the goal of this latest edition is to incorporate newer developments in the areas of instrumentation and radiopharmaceuticals while removing outdated material and maintaining affordability of the text. Radiology residents and nuclear medicine fellows comprise the intended audience for this introductory text. However, practicing nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists will likely find that thorough treatment of essential topics and fluid style are reasons to include this text in their libraries. The format of the current edition remains essentially true to its predecessors, the most recent of which was published in 1991. Newly added are helpful pearls and pitfalls sections at the end of most chapters and a chapter devoted to elements of image interpretation. The authors have also replaced many of the older images and greatly increased their numbers, resulting in a more complete treatment of the material. This book represents improvement in a text which was already considered to be among the best of its genre. Upgrades and additions, coupled with its low cost, should easily justify its purchase to newcomers to the field and to those familiar with its format from previous editions. It will undoubtedly remain a fundamental tool in the education of radiology and nuclear medicine residents for years to come.
