Reviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN (Slippery Rock University )
Description: This is the sixth edition of a book that introduces the consumer of nursing research to the research process and the skills needed to critically appraise research reports and apply the results to practice.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist consumers of nursing research in evaluating the adequacy of research findings in terms of merit and potential for utilization. This is an important purpose since it is a growing expectation that nurses will base practice on sound research evidence.
Audience: The target audience is undergraduate nursing students. The authors have a long history of publishing nursing research books.
Features: The book is divided into the usual steps of the research process. New to this edition is the enhanced assistance on critiquing studies, more emphasis on evidence-based practice implications, and increased coverage of qualitative research. The previous features to assist consumers of research have been retained. There are many features for student learning: chapter objectives, key terms, chapter summary points, suggested readings, full-length research examples, and critical thinking activities. A student study guide and CD-ROM accompany the book.
Assessment: This book will be of great use to the consumer of research and undergraduate nursing students. It is very user friendly. The updates to this edition justify its replacement.

This is the fifth edition of a book in which the authors aim to provide consumers of nursing research with the skills to critically evaluate research findings for scientific merit and utilization potential. This text is not intended to be a ""how to"" book for conducting research, rather it is more consumer focused than previous editions. The purpose is to assist consumers of nursing research evaluate the adequacy of research findings in terms of their scientific merit and utilization potential. The authors' purpose is fulfilled because the ability to critically appraise research reports is a growing expectation of nurses. The target audience is nursing students and nurses, particularly those learning to critically evaluate research reports. The two authors of the previous editions are joined for this edition by a third author who is well known for her research and writing on qualitative methods. The book consists of six main units: an overview, preliminary steps, research designs, data collection, data analysis, and critical appraisal and utilization of nursing research. Chapters contain research examples, consumer tips, and guidelines for critiquing reports. New to this edition are critical thinking activities. In most chapters the authors cover quantitative and qualitative methodology. Discussion of qualitative methods has been increased. Examples and consumer tips are highlighted in a different color. A teaching-learning package is available. This should be very useful to consumers of nursing research. This edition is more user friendly. The consumer tips are an asset. Illustrative research examples are provided and coverage of qualitative research has been increased.Overall, this book should provide a consumer of research with the skills to evaluate research for scientific merit and utilization potential.
