Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Donna Taliaferro, PhD, RN (University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio)
Description: This is the fifth edition of a pathophysiology text that reviews concepts of altered health states, integrating all aspects of individual cells and organs of the body into a functional whole that can be used to explain both physical and psychological aspects of altered health.
Purpose: The purpose is to relate normal body functioning to the physiologic changes that participate in disease production and occur as a result of disease, as well as the body's ability to compensate for these changes.
Audience: The text is targeted for nursing students at the undergraduate level. It is appropriate for nurse practitioner students and clinical nurse specialists, but the level is more appropriate for the undergraduate student.
Features: The overall design is clear and follows a systematic organization. The color illustrations and drawings are excellent. Objectives are provided at the beginning of each chapter. A list of prefixes, suffixes, and normal lab values are added with easy accessibility.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for schools of nursing. The organization is systematic and flows well. In some cases, however, current terminology is not used. Inaccurate information on erythema multiforme can be life-threatening. Chapter summaries are brief and would be more effective as bulleted sentences. There is a lack of current references in some chapters. In the temperature chapter, there is missing information on tempanic membrane measurement. The last ten years of research and publications by Abby and Holtzclaw have been omitted. (The use of cooling measures are counterproductive and drive the temperature up!) New information about stress is not included. Guidelines for HIV/AIDS are from 1993, although new ones appeared in 1998. These areas need to be addressed in future editions. The historical vignettes lacked a clear link to content in text. Otherwise, this is a quality text.
