Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mary Allen Carey, PhD (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description: This book delivers concept-based information about disease processes and altered health states. Written by a nurse physiologist, it relates normal body functioning to the physiologic changes involved in pathogenesis and those that result from disease. The book is an abridgement of a sixth edition textbook by the same author, Pathophysiology (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002)
Purpose: According to the author, a major emphasis in the preparation of this handbook was to relate normal body functioning to the physiologic changes that occur in disease production and as a result of disease, as well as the body's ability to compensate for these changes. The approach used by the author, integrates all of the aspects of the individual cells and organs of the human body into a total functional whole that can be used to explain both the physical and psychological aspects of altered health. The objectives of the book are extremely worthy and they are achieved.
Audience: The audience is undergraduate students in the health professions and is particularly suited for nursing students.
Features: The book is divided into 44 chapters and includes an extensive glossary of terms pertinent to physiology, selected laboratory parameters, and Web links. The material is logically presented as concepts which build upon each other with frequent examples integrated throughout. Color-coded summaries help the reader focus on the major issues and specially designed icons highlight patient populations including children, the elderly, and pregnant women. A CD-ROM that facilitates interactive learning is included with the book. The CD-ROM includes review questions for the material on the cell cycle, congestive heart failure, hypertension, the immune system, nerve synapse, and stroke. Also included with the book and CD-ROM is access to a free companion Web site with a student resource center and a faculty resource center.
Assessment: The quality of the book is excellent and the CD-ROM and the companion Web site great complement the book well.

Only buy if the copy was printed in the US

The copy of this book I purchased was printed in China and is missing most of chapters 21 & 22. I had purchased a med-surg book by this same publisher, printed in India and I had the same problem. Two chapters from that book were messed up as well. The publisher wouldn't help me with the first problem as I didn't purchase directly from them. Let's see what happens with this second book...
