    Book lacks depth

    I thought that even though this was an overview there would be some more detail. There is not enough information to get a true sense of what these philosophers believed in. I would not recommend this book to anyone

    This book was a big help to me

    This book made sense of the other philosophy books in a lot fewer words.
    It was much easier to understand than others I had to read, and more enjoyable.

    A Great Starting Point

    This is a great work. It is perfect as a comprehensive overview to get the reader started and up to speed with the names, terminology, and concepts of Philosophy. It is an excellent springboard and guidance for further research into a particular area of Philosophy or a particular philosopher. It should be the first book used in all Intro to Philosophy courses.

    Diving into philosophy

    I found the book to be well organized and quick with a synopsis of each Philosopher and their general points of view. It helped in making my decision on which of those mentioned I should read about in more detail. A bit biased against religion in general but you need to shake loose dogma to find free thought and ask yourself the questions you really want answers to before finding them in others.

    I expected more...

    The book provides a pretty adequate general overview of western philosophy, but as the other reviewers commented it does contain many errors. There's also the issue of his general writing style, he seems not only to be rather militantly biased (as per regards to his snide anti- religious remarks), but the fact he does this really interrupts his attempt at objectiveness in presenting the key ideas in western thought. I might have obtained a more intellectually satisfying overview had it not been for the unnecessary opinionations provided. Good overview, but certainly not as objective as I would have expected or liked.

    WOW....Errors galore

    On page 101, the book incorrectly refers to Schopenhauer's book as 'The World as Will and Idea,' when, in fact, his book is titled 'The World as Will and Representation.' This is just one more error in addition to all the others.

    There are much better overviews of Western philosophy

    The publisher's decsription suggests that Mannion writes in 'plain English.' This is true only if one interprets plain Englsih to mean shallow humor. Mannion's glib style simultaneously trivializes his subject and obscures whatever meaning one might hope to glean from so broad an overview. If you are looking for an outline of philosophy that will clearly and concisely present an overview of the material, this isn't it.

    Errors, but Good.

    This book was a good primer on philosophers, from the Greeks to 'New Age' philosophies. Yes, there were a few typos that should have been noticed by the editors, but it still was a good breif history of philosophy.

    Poor proofreading and factchecking.

    The section on Black Elk mistakenly used the word 'scared' when it intends to read 'sacred. And in a much more egregious error, the index sites Mary Wollstonecraft as the author of Frankenstein, when it was actually her daughter, Mary Shelley, who wrote the novel. Very big error. Yikes. Can't believe the publishers missed that.
