Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:Stephen M Fines, MD(University of Colorado School of Medicine)
Description:This is a basic radiology textbook to be used by both medical students and physicians who want an introduction to the field. The first edition was published in 1996.
Purpose:The purpose, according to the author, is to provide basic understanding of radiology to both medical students and physicians in a nonradiologic field. Although this book would not be very helpful to radiologists, it does provide basic understanding of the field and is useful for both students and family practitioners, internists, etc.
Audience:According to both the author, this book is written for students and practitioners in a non-radiologic field. The author is a very credible source.
Features:The book covers basic aspects of radiologic physics, anatomy, x-ray, CT, and MRI. At less than 400 pages, the book is an easy read for those interested. Most of the basics are covered, but there is no mention of nuclear medicine, which is an important part of radiology.
Assessment:This book does what it states. It provides a basic overview of the field for students and physicians in nonradiologic fields. It is a good beginner book for anyone interested in the field. However, for those in the field of radiology (residents and attendings), the book would be of limited value. Due to all of the advances in the field of radiology, a new edition every 8-10 years would be well received.
