Editorial Reviews

Lesia L. Tyson
The second edition of this book (first edition, 1987) contains a review of the purpose, history and methods of radiology, followed by didactics according to disease category. The purpose is to provide a single source containing the basic essentials of skeletal radiology. The book has worthy objectives that are met by the author. It seems to be written generally for chiropractic and medical students. The author is a credible authority in the subject matter. The book is illustrated appropriately and contains current and pertinent references. The table of contents is also adequate and the overall appearance of the book is good. The book has good quality, organization, text and images, making it useful for the student of skeletal radiology. This second edition adds new techniques and images that were not included in the first edition.
A comprehensive text on the radiology of skeletal disorders, for students, teachers, researchers, and practitioners. For this revised edition, color has been added to enhance readability and accentuate important points; a medicolegal implications sections follows many of the conditions discussed; algorithms are used in the chapter on the natural history of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis; a section on mnemonics appears at the end of each volume as a learning aid; new diagrams have been added, as well as new radiographic images; and the case material has been augmented with bone scans, CT, and MR imaging to reflect the technological revolution in musculoskeletal diagnosis. Updated references reflect the literature of most significant merit. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
From The Critics
Reviewer: Reza S Sazgari, B.S.; M.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: The third edition of this book focuses on all aspects of musculoskeletal radiology, covering the origins of radiography; anatomy, and radiologic positioning as well as a wide array of diseases and mimickers of those diseases. It thus serves as a useful reference for students, residents, and practicing radiologists. The second edition of this book was published in 1996.
Purpose: The book aims to be a clinical reference for musculoskeletal radiology, which is contained successfully in this two-volume book. By teaching how to interpret subtleties of radiologic images, the natural history of diseases, clinical relevance of pathology, differential diagnoses, and pitfalls in interpretation, this book is useful and essential.
Audience: Although targeted mainly at medical and osteopathic practitioners specializing in musculoskeletal radiology, medical students and radiology residents will also find the book useful. These well-respected and renowned authors ambitiously cover both basic and highly specialized aspects of their field. This book's usefulness as a reference makes it accessible for many levels of training.
Features: The book begins by covering basic, anatomy, positioning, and measurements in skeletal radiology. The creation of radiologic reports is discussed, as, of course, are diseases pertinent to musculoskeletal radiology, ranging from congenital disease, trauma, neoplasm, infection, arthritides, and nutritional and metabolic disorders. The authors, as with previous editions, have managed to be concise yet remain very thorough, supplementing text with image captions (rather than repeating text), and providing innumerable tables and useful capsule summaries of various diseases. Chapters on such topics as masqueraders of musculoskeletal disease and mnemonics help set the book apart from other books, as does the anatomy CD-ROM that accompanies the book. Image quality is excellent and many high-quality CT and MRI images have been added. Chapters covering arthritides, neoplasms, and nutritional/metabolic disorders are exceptionally well written and useful.
Assessment: This excellent book is a very worthy successor to its predecessors. With its updates of many images, additional multiple CT and MRI images, and text that remains extraordinarily thorough yet readable and digestible, this book is a worthy addition to most radiologists' libraries.
