Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anamaria Anderson
This is the Spanish translation of Victor Villasenor's rich collection of stories for young adults, Walking Stars: Stories of Magic and Power, which was first published in English in 1994. Set in Villasenor's native Southern California and Mexico, the stories in the first part of the collection, "Mi despertar al poder y a la magia" ("My awakening to power and magic") are autobiographical. In the second and third parts, Villasenor recounts stories he has sought out from his parents and other family members about the lives of his mother and father; many of the events in these stories are also woven into the author's bestselling book for adult readers, Rain of Gold. Each story concludes with an author's note in which Villasenor reflects on the story's background and its lessons for him and for his readers. Eventful and thought provoking, the collection demonstrates the author's great respect for his spiritual, familial, and cultural heritage. The Spanish translation preserves Villasenor's direct and informal narrative style; it would be a good choice both for native speakers of Spanish, especially those of Mexican and Mexican-American descent, as well as for Spanish language students.
