Overview

I am not like Evie. I don’t belong in some great romance. I’m just the best friend in the background. Always there, always reliable, down-to-earth. Good old Sarah. That’s how it’s always been. Until now.

At Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, Sarah is the faithful friend to Evie and Helen, her sisters in the Mystic Way. But this term Sarah finds that their friendship is tested. Evie is turning her back on the Mystic Way after laying her beloved Sebastian’s soul to rest; Helen is distracted by her tormented relationship with her mother. Sarah struggles to keep the sisterhood together as the threat of attack looms from the dark coven and the Unconquered lords.

All that keeps Sarah going is her connection with her earth powers and a promise she cannot break. When she must step out of the shadows and fight the eternal darkness, will her sisters join her, or will help come from unexpected sources, like her Romany ancestors and a love she’d only just dared hope for?

In this companion to the dazzling Immortal and heart-stopping Betrayal, the suspense and magic are as strong as stone and as deep as the earth.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—This book's beautiful cover will attract gothic paranormal romance readers, but the plot will leave them wanting more-and confused, unless they've read Immortal (2009) and Betrayal (2010, both HarperCollins). Reliable, down-to-earth Sarah, a student at the posh Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, on the English moors, is close with fellow students Evie and Helen. They are bound by the elemental powers that they share-water for Evie, air for Helen, and earth for Sarah. Sarah is plagued by dreams of ugly, misshapen creatures, accompanied by the relentless sound of drumming, but now the emotional distance she feels from Evie and Helen prevents her from confiding in them. Evie is grieving after losing her love, Sebastian, in Betrayal. Helen is moody and withdrawn after her unloving mother, the school's evil High Mistress, died and crossed into the shadow world as a vengeful spirit to serve the corrupt king. Sarah, part-Romany, loves Cal, a fellow Gypsy, but he's traveling. She feels the presence of her great-grandmother, a former student, and uses her diary to help her when Evie is kidnapped. Helen has an accident, and her mother reappears. Sarah suspects that the new student, Velvet Romaine, the wealthy, tabloid-worthy daughter of a rock star, is somehow involved. The two-dimensional characters, melodramatic plotting, and repeated phrases get annoying. Strictly for fans of the earlier books.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton
Kirkus Reviews

This third book in Shield's continuing supernatural series (Immortal, 2009, etc.)can feed the needs only of those who crave 100-percent full gothic fiction.

With good and evil witches' covens, an ancient Stonehenge-like circle, a magically sealed attic room, an abbey turned school and romance both natural and supernatural, the author does her best to include every convention of the genre. This book focuses on Sarah, a part-gypsy–turned-lady student and member of the good witches' coven, who struggles to keep the group together when best friend Evie tries to bow out. The main bad witch, thought vanquished in the previous installment, returns to wreak havoc. Havoc includes, in the most imaginative portion of the book, tempting Sarah into mysterious caves where gnomelike underground rock creatures can capture her and hold her forever. Gothic conventions continue as riders gallop wildly across the moors, ghosts appear when summoned and every kiss equals an out-of-body experience. Place names typically includey's or doublef's or both, as in "Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies," the novel's setting. Emotions, romances and dramatic situations turn on and off with the sudden intensity of a melodramatic silent movie from the 19-teens, a scenario also called to mind by much of the dialogue.

Some readers will enjoy it, especially those with little experience in the genre. It's all been done, better.(Supernatural romance. 12 & up)

Meet the Author

Gillian Shields is the author of Immortal and Betrayal, the first books about the sisterhood of the Mystic Way, as well as many other books for young readers. She spent her childhood roaming over the Yorkshire moors and dreaming of the Brontë sisters. After studying in Cambridge, London, and Paris, she became a teacher. She has taught in a girls’ boarding school and also in a drama school where it was rumored that the ghost of a young girl could be heard crying in the night. Gillian was inspired to write this series in celebration of the power of first love, the strength of female friendship, and the haunting mysteries of the past.

Another excellent book in this series but.....

....we have to wait for the last - I expect thrilling - quartet in the series. I noticed one reviewer gave the book one star. I couldn't understand this until I read the bit where she said she hadn't read it. Frankly I don't want or need reviews by people who haven't even read the book. It isn't fair to those of us who are interested in what we might buy and certainly not fair on the author: Gillian Shields has produced another compelling, page turning read. I loved it.

    No

I do not like it when authors change point of view from different characters in a story. Evie has been telling the story for the first two books and now, Sarah is telling the story. Sarah is a known character, she has only been a minor character and now she has oved to major. This is getting me confused already, I am not going to buy this book now. The whole series has changed

    IT'S OK.

I love all of theses book but this one was not good at all. There was very little romance and such and I hate the change in the point of view. Now that they changed the point of view, I find this book a huge disappointment.

I enjoyed the book immensely! If you enjoy fantasy romance novels, this is the book you want to read, though I suggest reading the first two first...

    Well written

Overall a very well written, and interesting book. Different in the ways of changing the main character while in the same series, but good none-the-less. Somehow, I am expecting the fourth book to be about Helen...
