Overview

The Christian does not live in a vacuum, says the author, but in a world of government, politics, labor, and marriage. Hence, Christian ethics cannot exist in a vacuum; what the Christian needs, claims Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is concrete instruction in a concrete situation. Although the author died before completing his work, this book is recognized as a major contribution to Christian ethics.


The root and ground of Christian ethics, the author says, is the reality of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. This reality is not manifest in the Church as distinct from the secular world; such a juxtaposition of two separate spheres, Bonhoeffer insists, is a denial of God's having reconciled the whole world to himself in Christ. On the contrary, God's commandment is to be found and known in the Church, the family, labor, and government. His commandment permits man to live as man before God, in a world God made, with responsibility for the institutions of that world.

Meet the Author

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau in 1906. The son of a famous German psychiatrist, he studied in Berlin and New York City. He left the safety of America to return to Germany and continue his public repudiation of the Nazis, which led to his arrest in 1943. Linked to the group of conspirators whose attempted assassination of Hitler failed, he was hanged in April 1945.

    A Paradigm-shattering Christian Ethic

    Bonhoeffer, a German biblical scholar, theologian, and pastor, stood to the death against the Nazi regime in his native country. This work (interupted by his incarceration in a concentration camp, and ultimately by his hanging, by special order of Himmler, just days before the camp was liberated by the allies) was, even in its unfinished state, perhaps his greatest literary contribution and gift to the Church. Bonhoeffer lived his ethic. He knew "the cost of discipleship." The "knowledge of good and evil," acquired by man's fall, is replaced in discipleship by the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and by the living Christ himself. Christ dwells in exactly the same place and space in a Christian's heart that was formerly occupied by his knowledge of good and evil. Jesus said that small is the gate, and narrow the way that leads unto life, and few there be that find it. This book was written by one of the few.

    insightfull and thought provoking

    Brings aspects of the entire Bible togeather and relates them to modern day and the code of society. It is a refreshing view of ethics from the Christian point of view.

    Excellent.

    This book is a classic of Christian thought that will shatter paradigms and force a reader (like me) who grew up in church to look at Christ, his purpose on earth, and the Christian's appropriate response in a completely new way. An excellent companion to this book (or perhaps for less ambitious readers) is Greg Boyd's book "Repenting of Religion", which deals with Bonheoffer's subject of the dichotomy between love and judgment on a more accessible level. There's also a workbook for small-group study. Both are highly recommended.
