About the Author

Dr. Eileen Morrison is a graduate of Vanderbilt University where she earned her doctorate in counseling and administration. She also holds a MPH from the University of Tennessee. She has developed and taught courses in health administration ethics to both undergraduate and graduate students and has been active in educating professionals through workshops and journal articles.' Currently, she is a professor of health administration at Texas State University in San Marcos Texas.

Description: This book responds to the continuous and rapid change in the healthcare system by providing healthcare administrators an ethical basis which they can use in making business, organizational, or patient-care decisions. The previous edition was published in 2016, and its focus was specifically on patient-centered care through quality and safety standards in response to the ACA. This edition focuses on the development of technology and decision making surrounding an increasingly technologically advanced medical environment. The book includes many cases to help ground the ethical theories and principles in practical decision making.
Purpose: The author notes that her intention is to provide an ethical foundation grounded in theory and principles of ethics, expanding on some of the goals of the previous edition. This principled foundation is to aid actors in this environment in which it is difficult to act ethically, partially due to the changing nature of healthcare. The author states, "This new edition assists readers in seeing the world though 'ethical eyes' as well as through financial ones." These objectives are indeed worthy; however, there does seem to be a degree of overlap between this and the previous edition.
Audience: The author identifies her primary audience broadly as healthcare administrators (HCAs). This book could also prove useful for other professionals in healthcare because it covers such a broad array of issues and types of ethics. The author's expertise on this issue is apparent in her ability to comprehensively cover the subject. Her background in education is particularly helpful in engaging readers in reflection and application of the material.
Features: This new edition notably features chapters on ethics in an era impacted by change. It additionally reorganizes and reorients some of the other chapters to focus on this edition's technological theme. It has a number of features designed to help readers learn the material, including a key terms section to build concept recognition. It also contains a thorough glossary in addition to a comprehensive index. Each chapter includes several web resources germane to the topic. The book falls short in copyediting, and there are some textual errors in the new chapters.
Assessment: The author's assessment of the rapidly changing state of healthcare is accurate, and the need for administrators to be poised to address these changes from within an ethical framework will be key to their long-term success. Because this edition comes shortly after its predecessor, there is a fair degree of overlap between the two. However, due to the scope of this edition and its restructuring around the theme of change, it seems to be a worthwhile contribution to the field.
