Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
This "Countries in the News" series grazes trouble spots of the world, selecting basic information about their history, politics, culture, and current events. Each volume includes statistics and brief discussions of both continuing problems and issues in the news, while offering students several prompts for further debate in the classroom. Ethiopia will acquaint readers with the country's ancient past and modern government under Haile Selassie, the Italian occupation, later Communist rule, and the present People's Revolutionary Democratic Front government. Ethiopia's diverse tribal populations are discussed, as are the war with Eritrea, huge population growth, and erosion of farmland causing poverty and famine. "Know Your Facts" sidebars present information on subjects like Ethiopia's neighbors, the 1984—85 famine, water shortages, and the growing and harvesting of coffee, Ethiopia's most valuable crop. Three issues are offered as questions for student discussion: government resettlement of the population to prevent future famines, trade barriers that cause suffering among poor nations, and the problem of obtaining affordable antiretrovirals (ARVs) from reluctant drug companies. Though barely skimmed here, Ethiopia's problems are quite interesting, especially details of the coffee industry and the plight of Ethiopia's children; some suggested remedies for the future include encouragement of tourism, diversification of agriculture, increased energy production, and the settling of tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Eye-opening information and color photos in this volume could inspire the further research necessary for an in-depth study of Ethiopia. Extra features includea timeline, a glossary, and a list of useful websites. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
