Overview

The most eagerly awaited disc of the entire ETHIOPIQUES series is this masterwork by the legendary Mahmoud Ahmed. Released in the U.S. 10 years ago and out of print since, ERE MELA MELA was for many the definition of Ethiopian soul music. Now you can hear that impossibly dark, aromatic blend of psychedelic guitar, saxophones, organ, and, of course, Mahmoud Ahmed's divinely charged vocals. Remastered and expanded with extra tracks, this is the place to get to know the heartthrob Ethiopians dubbed "Frash addash" -- the mattress renovator.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Tim Sheridan
Recording in the '70s in Addis Ababa, Ahmed mixed R&B with hypnotic Eastern vocal lines to create a most unusual style. At first the music seems familiar, with a lineup of guitar, bass, drums, and organ sounding like an ersatz Booker T and the MG's. But when Ahmed's keening, confounding voice joins in, listeners find themselves in new territory. The music is worthwhile just for its unsettling quality on Western ears.
