Overview

The European Union (EU), initially called the European Economic Community, was established after World War II with the aim of avoiding another catastrophic war on the European continent. Six countries-Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg-signed the founding Treaty of Rome in 1957. The EU has come a long way since then. Today, 27 countries are EU members, including 10 former Communist countries. The EU has moved toward a single market economy with many shared regulations, freedom of movement across borders, and a shared currency-the euro. Even with these developments, there have been conflicts within the EU. Little effort has been made to make ordinary citizens feel they have a hand in creating a European nation with a strong, shared European identity. In December 2007, the EU countries signed the Treaty of Lisbon, which is designed to make the EU more democratic, efficient, and transparent. The treaty also sets out the process by which a constitution can be arrived at. If it is ratified by all 27 member states, the treaty is due to come into force in 2009.
