This volume provides a comprehensive account of the evaluation and treatment of the infertile male. It is suitable for all physicians who encounter this common medical problem. Despite the prevalance of male infertility as a common underlying cause of infertility, its evaluation and treatment remains a difficult and misunderstood area for many doctors - a problem this volume aims to overcome. It includes chapters which review the full range of modern techniques now available for analysing semen and identifying the underlying cause of infertility, and then goes on to consider the various treatment options. The volume also discusses endocrine assessment and treatment, psychological aspects of male infertility, and includes a chapter on female infertility. This will be a valuable source of reference for general practitioners and physicians, urologists and gynaecologists.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
'This book is clearly written, with excellent tables to enable the physician to approach a clinical problem in logical fashion ... a useful reference book for the library as specific problem cases arise.' Dr Geoff Hackett, Trends in Urology, Gynaecology and Sexual Health

Reviewer: Fred K. Kirchner, Jr., MD (Vanderbilt University School of Medicine)
Description: As the title suggests, this new book deals with the evaluation and treatment of the infertile male.
Purpose: It will be a very useful reference for physicians, especially those who encounter potentially infertile mates infrequently in their practice, such as primary care physicians and many gynecologists and urologists. Many physicians feel inadequate when approaching infertility issues, and this contribution will help fill that gap.
Audience: As noted above, the primary audience will be office-based physicians, but it will also be a valuable addition to a medical school library and some department libraries. Twenty-three contributors representing a wide variety of viewpoints (e.g., andrology, gynecology, urology, psychiatry) enhance the credibility of this book.
Features: This compact book is appropriately illustrated. Tables are used to summarize data from a variety of reference sources concerning a specific topic. This format helps put results in perspective, especially for some of the newer treatment modalities. Numerous references at the end of each chapter will be helpful for the interested reader. A unique feature of the book is a series of tables in the first chapter that direct the reader to the appropriate chapters depending on the specific semen abnormalities detected in the patient.
Assessment: This book is user friendly in the way it directs the reader to pertinent chapters. Additionally, the chapters provide a succinct, but complete, review of some of the newer techniques of treatment, especially assisted reproductive techniques. The chapter on therapeutic donor insemination deals not only with technical issues but also legal and ethical concerns that will be of interest to students of law and medical ethics. The book is attractively priced.
