My love affair with cooking started long ago, but I remember it so clearly. When I was about six years old, my mom was leaving for work early one morning and I told her I was hungry. “So cook something!” she answered. I vividly remember pulling up a chair to the stove and turning it on with a match. (I know—dangerous, but it was a different time!) I selected the smallest frying pan I could fi nd because I wanted to cook one egg. Not eggs, just one egg. I cracked the egg on the edge of the pan, as I’d seen my mom do effortlessly many times before, and emptied it into the frying pan.

Of course, the pan was full of eggshell. I didn’t use any butter or oil, so the egg stuck everywhere. I can’t even remember now what it tasted like, but I can recall the feeling of accomplishment I had after cooking that egg. I found it empowering and energizing. I was hooked from that day forward.

I wanted to learn everything! I wanted my little EASY-BAKE Oven to make casseroles like my mom’s. I wanted my lemonade stand to have more flavor options than just lemon. And for Christmas I wanted my own hand mixer! I eventually graduated from cooking an egg to making my own spaghetti sauce.

I have my family to thank for my cooking skills and the inspiration they gave me to begin my own culinary journey. My dad was a big believer in never eating fast food, so we were not allowed to have it. And nothing ever went to waste. I grew up on a ranch outside of Corpus Christi, Texas, and throughout my childhood my family grew our own vegetables and raised our own chickens. Every day my mom cooked with garden-fresh calabasa (squash), carrots, and beans, and freshly laid eggs. Every last bit of that garden’s harvest was always used, and any trimmings went right to the compost pile. She worked full-time as a special education teacher; took care of my oldest sister, who is developmentally disabled; and had three other daughters to drive all over town to cheerleading, band practice, work, and everywhere else busy teenage girls need to go. But in spite of it all, she always managed to have dinner on the table every night at 6P.M. for my dad. This was such an important lesson in my life. The fact that my mother clearly reveled in taking care of her family in addition to having a career inspired me to be the same way. I cannot count the number of times that I’ve found myself in a Gucci dress and heels—with full hair and makeup, about to run out to an event—pulling a roasted chicken out of the oven in order to make sure that my family is fed before leaving the house to face a hundred photographers on a red carpet.

Meet the Author

Eva Longoria is best known for her award-winning role as Gabrielle Solis on ABC’s mega-hit Desperate Housewives. Her extensive charity work earned her the Hollywood Reporter’s Philanthropist of the Year award in 2009. Eva is the owner, with Todd English, of Beso, an eatery in Hollywood and Las Vegas that features upscale contemporary steakhouse cuisine with a Latin flair. She is a graduate of Texas A&M–Kingsville and lives in California and Texas.

I picked this up right away when it came out after hearing celebrity gossip over and over about how Eva Longoria could COOK. The cookbook is gorgeous, all of the food looks excellent, and everything I've tried is very very good! My friends and family have been equally excited about the book as well. It's a nice blend of Tex Mex dishes with a few of some old American classics. Eva often explains why she chose each recipe and who taught her how to cook it which make it interesting. There's a lot of recipes. Main dishes, appetizers, desserts, sauce recipes, drinks, snacks, and more. I'm vegetarian and there's a lot of things I can eat and also things I can easily substitute ingredients so that I can still eat it. Plus, there's plenty of recipes for all the meat lovers. =] Don't be misled by the rating on here (two stars? come on!) - it must be Nook owners rating the ebook (or possibly even just rating the sample - the full nookbook isn't so bad, in my opinion) - but the physical book is a fantastic value - the best way to go. Highly recommended.

I just recieved this cookbook after having pre-ordered it. I LOVE it. I have a huge collection of cookbooks and this one is definately at the top of my list. I cant wait to try some of them out, especially the tortilla soup! If you love to cook as much as I do, you MUST get this book!

I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL BOOK, THIS IS MY FIRST COOKBOOK AND I LOVE IT. I HAVE MADE 12 OF THESE DISHES SO FAR, NOT DISAPPOINTED IN ANY OF THEM. NOT ALL THE DISHES ARE MEXICAN SO I USE THIS BOOK AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK FOR VARIETY. I'VE GIVEN THIS BOOK AS A GIFT TO MY 2 NIECES, GODDAUGHTER AND BEST FRIEND. I ALSO GAVE THE SPANISH VERSION TO MY MOM'S CAREGIVER WHO IS MEXICAN AND A GREAT TRADITIONAL MEXICAN COOK, SHE TELLS ME SHE LOVES IT AND STAYED UP LATE AT NIGHT READING THE STORIES AND REVIEWING THE "IDEAS & HINTS" SHE TOO FOUND IT VERY HELPFUL, WE CAN ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING, JUST NEED AN OPEN MIND.

I've never written a review before for anything. I love to cook (and am good at it) so I was so excited about this cookbook. I stayed up late reading the recipes cover to cover thinking yummy! I've cooked 3 recipes this weekend and was disappointed in all three: lemon orzo soup, corn and zucchini salad and the tortilla soup. I had to find a hole in the wall grocery to get the pasilla peppers but hunted for them to make the soup exactly as the recipe instructed. The tortilla soup was greasy and bland. I wonder if it would be a lot better with double the peppers, garlic, onion, tomatoes. I still plan on trying a few more recipes but I am bummed that so far I wouldn't remake one of the recipes I've made so far. Some of the ratings are misleading because I've read reviews that gave 5 stars but the person hadn't cooked anything yet. Who cares if a cookbook is pretty if the recipes aren't any good.
