This book is about the entire life of the author, Alex Karras. Starting off, he tells the story of childhood.Growing up with brothers who were famous for their athletic abilities, he was always associated as "the little brother of....". After making a name for himself in high school, maybe as the best high school football player in Indiana of all time, he went to college at the University of Iowa. The book is not so much about his football games and how he did, but about his life outside the game and how the culture of football, that he seemed to be surrounded by, had influenced life at that time. The loneliness of his life is a major theme of the book, which is clearly portrayed in the way he handles his relationships with others. He seems to be looking for that one thing to fill the whole in him , but could never find it. After getting drafted to the NFL, he has a long career full of turmoil but he succeeds in the long run by remembering where he came from, the steel mill city of Gary, Indiana.
The main character's culture was a Greek-American football player from a lower class of the economy. The story helps to demonstrate some of the issues that arise in everyday life and show how the author was able to fall back on his roots to get through everything and have an overall successful and enjoyable life.
