"EVEN MONSTERS is ADORABLE and something both my kids would have loved when they were younger. There's something to discover on every page meaning kids will want to go back again and again to see if they can find something new" - Good Reads with Ronna

" In this adorably illustrated children's book... the author wrote this story to take the fear away from children that monsters are more like them than they realize. I wish I had this story to read when I was a child. Well done!" - Night Owl Reviews

"Such a sweet book to share with the little monster... I mean... the child in your life!" - Bumbles and Fairy Tales

" AJ Smith speaks to the hearts of the littlest readers...if you're the adult reading this book aloud, Smith didn't forget you: nearly each page has details that will make you smile, too, and lots of grown-ups-will-notice jokes." - Bookworm Sez

PreS-Gr 1—"Everybody knows monsters SNARL! But did you know…Even snarling monsters ride the bus to school. They learn their ABC's and draw in art class." Readers quickly find out that monsters are just like them. The true winner of this book is the amazing art. Every spread seems to have hidden jokes and amusing details. The monster chooses "Swamp Munch Cereal" ("free bugs inside") and "Mantis Milk" for breakfast, and he wears "Fur of the Loom" underwear. These additions will make the book a favorite in both storytimes and one-on-one readings. Pair it with Mo Willems's Leonardo, the Terrible Monster (Hyperion, 2005) for a laughter-filled beastie storytime.—Brooke Rasche, La Crosse Public Library, WI
Kirkus Reviews
2014-03-03
Who says monsters can only be frightful? Although monsters roar, snarl, grumble, growl and howl, Smith's playful text asserts that they also know how to behave. The text's cheeky humor is immediately apparent as the tasks the little monsters carry out involve putting on clean underwear and combing cooties out of their fur. Illustrations extend the text about eating a "well-rounded breakfast" by depicting a box of "Swamp Munch Cereal" with "Free Bugs Inside" alongside a carton of "Mantis Milk." Such playful intraiconic work affirms the interdependence of art and text, but the occasional indistinctness of the art and the sometimes-cluttered layout of the pages undermine the overall cohesion of the work as a whole. Furthermore, readers familiar with Jane Yolen and Mark Teague's How Do Dinosaurs… series may find that this title cuts a bit too close to the line between similar and derivative in its execution. A humorous, somewhat unoriginal offering—for kids who prefer monsters to dinosaurs. (Picture book. 3-5)

Have you ever wondered if life would be easier if you could only be a monster? Well, then here is a book that lets you know that even monsters have chores and fears. See if it is any better or any worse than the life you live.

A wonderful story for young readers. Those between the ages of 5 and 7 in my family had a fun time reading the book and laughing together.

This is a really cute book. It shows kids that even monsters go to school, brush their teeth, and play soccer. Kids can identify with the monsters and their activities, because it's the same stuff that most kids do every day. Monsters play video games, play in tree houses, and ride the school bus. Kids also find out that monsters are even afraid of the dark, and sometimes need a reassuring kiss goodnight.

The book is 32 pages long with a short sentence for each spread, so it's quick to read. Because it's so quick, toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy the story right alongside their older siblings, even if they don't do some of the activities described (like go to school).

The illustrations are just as much fun as the cover suggests. Kids will love the monsters and all their hairy, snarly, gooeyness.
