Overview

Chatelaine Du Prey lives a sheltered, sometimes lonely life, traveling across America in the 1860s with a circus troupe run by her parents. But they are no ordinary family; they belong to the Sanga, a race of blood-drinkers who hide in the dark night mists in every corner of the world. Some, like Chatelaine and the rest of the troupe, satisfy themselves with the blood of animals destined for the cook-pot. But there are those who are not so easily sated.

And there are other dangers in the night - were-cats, demons, cutthroats and wraiths.

When Chatelaine's whole world is torn out from under her, she can no longer trust those that she loves, or the strangers who offer her sanctuary in the mansion called Zante. Her heart wants to trust Israfel Devry, the beautiful young master of the mansion, but he is a human. She realizes can only trust her own visions and powers - but are they enough to save her from the terror that awaits her in the dead of night?
