Children's Literature - Cindy K. Schofield
Everglades National Park is a water-covered 50 by 100 mile area that is home to the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Swamps, marshes, and islands of trees provide habitats for birds, fish, reptiles, and mammals. The park provides a safe haven, protected by the government, where this unique ecosystem of plants and animals can survive and thrive. The author describes phenomenon unique to Everglades Park such as the brackish water where salt and fresh water meet, the gator holes, the mangrove swamps, and endangered animals. But she also delves into more general concepts identifying the key attributes of the national park system, habitats, photosynthesis, and common characteristics of plants and animals that live either in the water or on the land. The pages are full of photos and brief descriptions of many of the species found in the park. In addition to its value as an introduction to the Everglades, the design of this little book introduces young readers to what a reference book is. A table of contents clearly outlines the subjects presented, the index uses keywords to guide readers to specific information, and a glossary defines words throughout the text that are highlighted as key concepts. With or without guidance from a teacher or parent the young reader will learn not only about the subject matter presented, but also about how to read a nonfiction book. Reviewer: Cindy K. Schofield
