Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jill Walton
How many people know that a "bight" is a bay within a larger bay in the Florida Everglades? Florida's unique attachment to the North American continent is likely due to the collision of Africa and North America during the process of continental drift 300 million years ago. This book is one in a series on national parks in the United States, and Frisch provides intriguing information on every page. Readers learn the history and details of the Florida Everglades National Park. Located in the southern portion of the peninsula of Florida, this national park has little in common with other such parks. It has no mountains, no valleys, and no deserts; it is one big subtropical wetland barely above sea level. In 1934, the U.S. Congress authorized 3,000 square miles of the land to be set aside as the Everglades National Park. However, funds to protect the park were limited. Poaching, water diversion, and reduced water quality threatened the survival of the ecosystem for decades. Protecting the region and its native inhabitants is still a serious concern. Today, visitors enjoy bird watching and fishing there, both activities enhanced by the use of canoes and kayaks. An adjacent national park and national preserve on either side of the Everglades offer coral reefs and cypress and pine forests to expand outdoor experiences. Eye-catching illustrations and photographs combine with solid text to make this a worthy addition to library, school and home. Includes a glossary, a bibliography, a list of websites, and a detailed index. Reviewer: Jill Walton

Gr 4–7—This series delivers the next best thing to traveling to the national parks in person. Informative and visually stunning, each title provides a level of access report writers will appreciate. Features covered include each park's history, geography, animal life, recreational activities, and conservation efforts. The writing is direct and illustrative: "Yosemite is characterized by sky-piercing mountain peaks and plunging waterfalls." Illustrations consist of archival and present-day photos, drawings, and maps. The many color photographs are of exceptionally fine quality, giving the images an almost stereoscopic quality. First-rate all around.
