Meet the Author

Belva Plain
Belva Plain

Belva Plain is the New York Times bestselling author of Evergreen, Random Winds, Eden Burning, Crescent City, The Golden Cup, Tapestry, Blessings, Harvest, Treasures, Whispers, Daybreak, The Carousel, Promises, Secrecy, Homecoming, Legacy of Silence, Fortune’s Hand, After the Fire, Looking Back, Her Father’s House, The Sight of the Stars, Crossroads, and Heartwood. A Barnard College graduate who majored in history, Belva Plain lived in Millburn, New Jersey, where she and her husband raised three children. She died in 2010.

Biography

Belva Plain captured readers' hearts with her first novel, Evergreen (1978), published when the author was a grandmother. It topped The New York Times bestseller list for 41 weeks and aired as an NBC-TV miniseries in 1985. In all, twenty of her novels appeared on The New York Times best-seller list.

Before she became a novelist, Belva Plain wrote short stories for many major magazines (she sold her first story to Cosmopolitan), but taking care of a husband and three children did not give her the time to concentrate on the novel she always wanted to write. In retrospect, she said, "I didn't make the time." Now, with well over 25 million copies of her books in print, translated into 22 languages, her fans can be grateful she demonstrated a better-late-than-never attitude.

A Barnard College graduate who majored in history, Belva Plain enjoyed a wonderful marriage of more than 40 years to Irving Plain, an ophthalmologist, who died in 1982. She lived most of her life in New Jersey where she and her husband raised their family. Belva Plain died at her home in October 2010. She was 95.

    Profound Novel

This is one of a handful of novels that had a profound influence on me. I was a sophomore in college when I read it, and then embarked on studies in Jewish American history because I was so moved by the characters and their stories. Plain is a master at the art of sagas.

    Hauntingly unforgettable

Having read this book when it was first published, I found it so memorable I saved it for my daughter who is now 30. She, in turn, put it away for her own. It is definitely a "must read", even for Irish-American Catholics like us.

    A Masterpiece

A truly moving book! It captivates you and draws you in from the first page. You read it and you live it. There is a realistic plot filled with hopes, dreams, love, and true sorrow. Possibly one of the best novels ever written.

    this book was horrible

I thought Evergreen was poorly written and the characters seemed like they weren't even real people. It wasn't romantic at all, just boring. I couldn't even finish it. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except maybe to my worst enemy.

    The Greatest Book Ever Written

Evergreen is the greatest LOVE Story ever written. I have read the book many times and I can enjoy it over and over again. It would be nice to have a sequel. This is the one book I recommend to all my friends to read.
