VOYA - Amy Wyckoff
Gregory, Ivy's evil stepbrother, has returned in Beth's body and has vowed to take vengeance against Ivy. Ivy can see the changes in Beth as Gregory takes over her body and causes Beth to act erratically and violently towards Ivy. Luckily, Ivy does not have to face Gregory alone because Tristan, operating in the body of Luke, is around to comfort Ivy. Luke, however, is still wanted for his ex-girlfriend, Corinne's, murder and has to stay hidden on the Cape. Ivy sneaks out at night to spend time with Luke because, despite what the police think, she loves him unconditionally. She sets out to solve the mystery of the night of Corinne's death, of which Luke has no memory. Along the way to solving the crime, Ivy and Tristan learn about Luke's former life and the person who killed Corinne and tried to kill Luke. The murderer is more than willing to finish off what he started. This sequel to Evercrossed (Simon Pulse, 2011/VOYA April 2011) is also told in short, suspense-filled chapters that will keep teens reading. The story seemed to take off in two directions, however, and the conclusion seemed rushed after so many pages of detailed descriptions and banter-like dialogue. Ivy's unwavering affection for Tristan/Luke at the expense of her other friendships becomes tiring, making her a less-than-lovable protagonist. At the conclusion, readers become aware that the series is not complete and Gregory will likely return in someone else's body. Reviewer: Amy Wyckoff

Gr 8 Up—Tristan is an angel hiding inside Luke's body (Luke is dead), Gregory is a demon controlling Beth's body. Tristan saved Ivy's life (even though he shouldn't have), Beth is Ivy's best friend, but Gregory hates Ivy; Tristan is Ivy's boyfriend but he has to keep out of sight because Luke has been accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and is wanted by the law (even though he is dead). Confused yet? In this sequel to Evercrossed (S & S, 2011), which hopefully makes sense of these jumbled, episodic events), Ivy, in a very Nancy Drew kind of way, hopes to clear Luke's name so that she and Tristan/Luke can be together. Ivy calls on angels to help her out of several scrapes, and, miraculously, they do. This clean supernatural romance mystery tries a bit too hard to be all things. There's very little character development; rather, the story is propelled forward by one quick scene after another. Libraries that have fans of the previous title may want to purchase this one. Others can pass.—Angela J. Reynolds, Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Bridgetown, NS, Canada
Kirkus Reviews
This third entry in the Kissed by an Angel series apparently is not the last, as it solves one mystery and wins a battle that leaves readers with another cliffhanger. Ivy remains in forever-love with Tristan, who died in the first book but now inhabits Luke's body. Tristan became a fallen angel when he illegally saved Ivy from death with a kiss in the second installment, but he doesn't yet appear to be distressed by that development. The characters continue to rely on a real angel, rebellious and erratic Lacey, the most entertaining character in the book, who always comes through in a pinch. Meanwhile danger looms as Gregory, the evil spirit who was the original murderer, now possesses Beth, Ivy's best friend, with fateful intent. Amid that tangle of characters the author presents an equally large population of friends. In this volume, the main focus is on clearing Luke's name for murdering his girlfriend. Ivy and Tristan (as Luke) investigate. Chandler picks up the pace from the last installment with a bit more suspense, especially in the Gregory/Beth and Tristan/Luke combinations. Readers who began with the first installment will enjoy the continuing story, if they can disentangle the complexities of the plot and the natural and supernatural relationships. Others would do best by starting over from the beginning and paying close attention. Complicated. (Paranormal romance. 12 & up)
