Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Erotic, darker than sin, and better than good chocolate." -Holly Lisle "Lynn Viehl continues to weave an intricate web of intrigue in this contribution to this amazing series." -Romantic Junkies
Publishers Weekly

Scottish vampire Byrne wrestles with love for Jayr, his female seneschal (or senior officer in charge of domestic ceremonies) in this fifth book in the Darkyn series. In order to dispel temptation, Byrne, lord of Orlando, decides to hold a tournament to see who will replace him as ruler of his domain. A bevy of ambitious vampires come forward, including, distractingly, a vampiric Robin of Locksley (i.e., Robin Hood). When a stranger appears claiming to be the rival Lord of Nottingham, tempers are set immediately on edge. Things grow even more complicated as Jayr and Byrne's attraction becomes too great to ignore, and attempts are made on Byrne's life, perhaps by a lord overeager to take his seat. The plot is full of exciting twists and turns, but the chemistry between Jayr and Byrne is fairly tepid. Knowledge of prior books helps one along, but overall Viehl tells a self-contained, page-turning story of medieval vampires. (Jan.)

Definitely by favorite of the series

I really enjoyed this one best. I was great to see a strong female as the lead who held the same level or respect as her male counterparts. This genre can but VERY headstrong male driven. That is what draws people to books like this... it is just nice to see the woman finally be equal for once.

Not the BEST in the series

This is a series I really enjoyed - I have read all the books... But I was very disappointed in this book. The other books quickly grabbed my sttention and sped me through to the very last page. The plot in this one though seemed to really drag and not much interesting happened until the end of the book... I had a really hard time staying with it and only did because the books before it had been so good... The book after this one is excellent.

I would still recommend the series but this one is not that good.

    Series get's better and better

This was the best book yet in this series and Ms Viehl should be commended for the balance of romance, intrigue and continuity. I look forward to the next installment.

    Strong followup

I won a copy of this book from the author in September and read it immediately. It was very good, and if you have any interest in vampire fiction, check out the Darkyn series. The nice thing is at the time, I had read only the first book in the series, and I had no problem following this book. What happened in the prior books was inferred enough that I wasn't lost. I've since read the others, and they're very good, too. This story focuses on Jayr and Byrne - you can read the plot description yourself. What I particularly liked about this book was the characterizations. Someone who has lived for hundreds of years could be caricaturish or unredeemable, depending on how you handle it, but Jayr, Byrne (and indeed, Cyprien, Philippe, and the rest of the Darkyn) are all nuanced and complex. A refreshing read, and her plot twists always get me at the end. The pacing is admirable.

    A reviewer

Almost from the moment he transformed her from human to Kyn, they have loved one another. However, Scottish vampire Laird Byrne and his loyal seneschal Jayr have hidden their love for one another from each other with each having what they believe is a good reason to conceal their feelings. However, recently Byrne has struggled with temptation, which has led to a loss of self control and jealous rage. Fearing he will harm his beloved, he hosts a tournament in which the winner will replace him as Laird of Orlando. Meanwhile Jayr has decided enough with eternal unrequited love she plans to seduce her master and let that lead to whatever fate she wrought. Vampires from around the realm arrive for the contest, but one of them is trying to steal the prize by assassinating the host and if necessary his beloved head of household. --- This is an excellent medieval paranormal romance due to the relationship between the lead couple as they share blood, but anything more is taboo. Furthermore although they love one another, he feels guilt for converting her and she is wary of what will happen if she follows her heart. Treachery at the tournament compounds the feelings as life in Lynn Viehl¿s Darkyn realm turns darker. --- Harriet Klausner
