Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
In the introduction, readers are encouraged to explore a day in a new numerical way. Instead of counting days (how many until Christmas?) the authors invite us to count all the things that happen in a twenty-four-hour period. With eight sections covering Living Things, Earth, Food, The Human Body, Pop Culture, Space, Technology and Sports with one fact per page on almost every one of its 217 pages, quite a bit of interesting if esoteric information is provided. "Would you believe in one day your heart pumps enough blood to fill the tank of a fire engine?" "There are literally millions of children playing Rock Paper Scissors every day." And did you know Girl Scouts sell more than 3 million boxes of cookies every day? With a loose interpretation of their goal—one page is a discussion about taste buds that does not relate to the twenty-four hour theme—the authors present an interesting look at the important and not-so-important data that makes up our everyday lives. A table of contents and an index are provided as well as a list of sources from which the authors gathered their information. An interesting browsing book to add to a library collection but not a necessary purchase. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
