Every Now and Then: The Very Best of Claire Martin

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
Claire Martin provided some of the most interesting and adventurous jazz singing of the 1990s, although the end of the decade found her taking a more pop-oriented approach. Martin's straight-ahead jazz singing is the main focus of this collection, which was assembled in 2001 and spans 1992-2000. The only non-jazz offerings are performances of Nick Drake's haunting "Riverman" and Al Kooper's bluesy "More Than You'll Ever Know"; other than those two tracks, Every Now and Then: The Very Best of Claire Martin is jazz-oriented. And the CD paints an attractive picture of Martin's cool-toned jazz singing with material from excellent 1990s albums like Old Boyfriends Rupert ...

And the CD paints an attractive picture of Martin's cool-toned jazz singing with material from excellent 1990s albums like Old Boyfriends Rupert Holmes' "Partners in Crime" and The Waiting Game Joni Mitchell's "Be Cool". Meanwhile, 1996's Make This City Ours -- which marked the time the British singer recorded an album in the U.S. -- is nicely represented by interpretations of "No Moon at All" and the Brazilian standard "Estate." Overall, Linn's choices are smart ones, but the CD isn't without its problems. Linn fails to provide any recording dates -- which is lazy and inexcusable -- and there are no liner notes either. Evidently, Linn felt that liner notes weren't needed, but in fact they were. Although Martin became very well-known in England in the 1990s, she didn't fare nearly as well in the U.S. -- and Linn should have provided liner notes for those who need to read about her impressive history. But despite its problems, this CD is worth owning. For those who have not experienced the joys of Martin's singing, Every Now and Then would be a generally rewarding, if imperfect, introduction to her work.
