Overview

Ally, Bree, and Jack meet at the one place the Great Eclipse can be seen in totality, each carrying the burden of their own problems, which become dim when compared to the task they embark upon and the friendship they find.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Confirming her mastery of the middle-grade novel, Mass (Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life) combines astronomy and storytelling for a well-balanced look at friendships and the role they play in shaping identity. Three narrators take turns: Ally, who lives with her parents and younger brother at the Moon Shadow Campground and loves every tree and every rock on it, but most especially the stars above it; glamour-loving Bree, who announces to readers that she must have been "switched at birth" to explain her presence among physicist parents and a geeky younger sister; and Jack, who is helping his science teacher lead a solar eclipse tour to the Moon Shadow to make up his failing grade. The trio's paths converge because Ally's parents have sold the Moon Shadow to Bree's, and everyone meets up at the campgrounds during a major eclipse. The voices reflect the distinct personalities, and while the outcome is never in doubt-each character discovers unexpected powers of adaptability and new talents-Mass keeps the developments believable. Information about solar eclipses and astronomy is carefully woven into the plot to build drama and will almost certainly intrigue readers. Ages 8-12. (Oct.)

From The Critics
Moon Shadow Campground is in the right spot to view a total eclipse of the sun. That means that eclipse chasers from all over the country are going to descend upon Ally's home, and she is looking forward to it. She and her brother have been raised on the isolated campground, enjoying the opportunities to research and study the skies. Ally's greatest hope is to discover a planet. Bree's city family is planning on making the trip to the isolated campground to see the eclipse. They are also planning on taking over the campground from Ally's family, allowing them to do their own research while giving Ally's family a chance to live in the "civilization" of the city. Unfortunately, Bree is looking for a career in fashion modeling and there is not much call for that at the campground. Jack is on his way to summer school when his science teacher unexpectedly invites Jack to join him at the Moon Shadow campground for the eclipse. His teacher regularly leads eclipse chasers in North America and this is an event not to be missed. So Jack, Bree and Ally all find themselves at the Moon Shadow for the celestial event. Told in their three voices, the young teens learn much about themselves as they learn about each other, family relationships, and the science of an eclipse. The novel does a great job of integrating astronomy into a story of peer relationships and the changes that life brings. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson

    Great Read

I read this book for a school book project. Honestly, I didn't think I would enjoy it. As I found out - again - never judge a book by it's cover! The details create a totally new atmosphere. One thing about this book really caught my interest... The chapters are arranged by characters' point of view. For example, there are three chapter 1's. Alley 1, Bree 1 and Jack 1. Wendy Mass introduced a new style of writing to me. I loved the formatting of this book and I ABSOLUTELY loved the storyline. Once you get into the plot and get to know the characters, you find yourself wondering, how much can change? - even in the blink of an eye.

Amazing. Puts a Smile on Your Face as You Laugh and Cry!

    This book is totally amazing.
The cover art is so beautiful as well!
Even if you don't think twice about science [kind of me], you'll be totally engrossed.
It is filled with information on stars and planets, and you soak up information without even knowing you're learning.
You can see that the characters grow as people as they learn to accept life's challenges.
The three friends, Bree, Jack, and Ally are main characters, and each have one special quality about them.
Wendy Mass lets you befriend the characters and portrays the story in such a way that you connect to each one of the characters.
It was a book that I picked up, got totally engrossed until the very end, and when I finished, I thought to myself 'this book was SO totally worth buying.'.

eclipse draws wierd things. BY ASHLEY WERNER

When a total eclipse of the sun happens to take place at Moon Shadow Campground; how will three unlikely friends cope with the adventure that lurks right in front of them? Three people from all over the world find themselves at one spot - in the middle of nowhere; just to see a once in a lifetime eclipse.

Bree is the popular girl in school. Every boy wants to date her and every girl dreams of being her best friend. She is beautiful and plans to be a model someday. Her mother, father and little sister has obsessions with science evaluations. What does she do when she finds out she is moving?
Ally's home is Moon Shadow Campground. Her and her brother help keep it running by keeping the guests happy and cleaning their "Unusuals."
She has finds out that she is also moving. Ally and Bree team up to find out what they have to accept.
Jack is a loner. He has little to no friends and his only brother hates to hang out with him. He has failed science and has to go to summer school. When an opportunity arises, will he take the chance?
It's a twist in bibliotherapy; to help people handle moving and the difficulties of what certain kinds of friendships bring. It seems to suck readers in with all its vivid descriptions; it's like you really are experiencing a total sun eclipse. People who love science or astronomy should definitely put this on their "to do" list. Persons of 8th grade and older should have no problem reading this novel.

    Amazing

So I got this book from my younger sister who was reading it for school and figured I would read it while she had it at home, and this book may be written for 8-12 year olds, but even being 21 I loved this book!! I've also read Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass and really enjoyed that too. I plan on reading all of Wendy Mass' books because I really like her writing. This book has really made me want to learn a lot more about astrology and now I want to try to see a total solar eclipse someday.

So, so, good!!! Every soul should read this novel!

I received this through my mother's school book orders, and I was extremely happy to start reading it. I was not disappointed!! Wendy Mass created three fine characters, who just would simply like to try something new without leaving what they know and love.

Like stars? You guessed it - You will love this book!!

Three young teenagers all come together to see something that they may never experience again: An eclipse. Will they fall and crumble before it even comes?

    EVERY SOUL A STAR

EVERY SOUL A STAR is probably 1 of the most interesting books ever written. I say this based on my own experience, because as soon I started reading, I couldn't stop. This book mainly talks about astronomy, the study of stars. But what really caught my atention were the main characters-Ally, Bree, and Jack. they had nothing in common on the outside, but on the inside, they had one thing in common, fear.
this story is told from 3 unique points of view, all with distinct opinions on various situations. It's about 3 unlikely teenagers coming together on the night of a solar eclipse and finding out more about themselves than they ever knew before. this book had plenty of heart and thats what I mainly look in a book.

    Really good story

The Book was actually better than I expected it to be. This book was just different than all the other books I read. I enjoyed it very much, and its worth reading. Without doubt I would recommend this book to a friend. The story is very good at explaining that you should not hate something before you even experience it. I think if I recommend this book to my friends thy would also recommend it to their friends.
I have also heard about the other books by Wendy Mass and they all seem very interesting. I have read the reviews for 11 Birthdays and I really want to read it. Its really cool that the character's birthday keeps repeating and, I am really interested in knowing how she stops it from repeating. I haven't looked into any other books by Wendy Mass but I will be sure to.
