Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
The front cover shows a boy cowering under the covers of his bed in the dark. Feelings associated with being scared are explored. Three examples of times when children are afraid are told by two or three simple sentences per page and illustrations. Ben is afraid of the dark. Maya's mother takes her to school for the first time. Jack is separated from his father in a store. The colored cartoon-like pictures show children in their usual settings with various emotions. A glossary defines feelings in the following way: "your feelings tell you how you are and what kind of mood you're in." An index is included. A note for parents and teachers says, "Look at the front cover of the book together. Talk about the picture." Notes continue to give discussion suggestions page by page. This is a wonderful book to facilitate discussion of feelings between adults and children. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
