Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
Sid has a plan for the weekend...to make a pillow fort and watch TV all day. But when his parents do not think that is such a great idea, and tell him about the importance of exercise, Sid sets out on a mission to learn more about why it is so important to get your body moving. With the help of Teacher Susie and his friends at school, Sid finds that getting your heart beating and healthy exercising is not only good for you, but it's fun, too! Ironically derived from a television series, Sid the Science Kid, the overly-cartoonish illustrations seem as though they are copied directly from the screen to the paper, and the many colors and shapes on each page are overstimulating, exemplifying the downfalls of many children's television shows themselves. The mixed message of a book derived from a television show that is teaching children to turn off their televisions and get their body moving is a bit hard to wrap the mind around. Regardless, the subject matter is useful, as throughout his search for information, the benefits of moving your body are explained in simple ways...it helps our heart, builds strong muscles, and even helps us to think better. For children who have fallen into the common trap of on-screen entertainment only, this is a valuable lesson to learn. Why not try to prevent the problem before it starts? Reviewer: Carly Reagan
