Overview

Meet a guardian angel like no other, from a writer like no other. Bold rising star, Victoria Schwab, makes her whimsical, inspiring, and clever middle-grade debut.

At a first glance, Aria seems like your average twelve-year-old girl. She has coppery hair, colored shoelaces, and a passion for cupcakes. But there's more to Aria than meets the eye. She can dream things into existence, use her own shadow like a door, and change the world in small, important ways. Aria is a guardian angel. She's been sent here to earn her wings. But to do that, she'll have to help three different girls.

Aria's first mission is Gabby Torres. Gabby's always been quiet, but ever since her brother got sick, she's barely said a word. When a new school offers her a fresh start, Gabby wants badly to be someone new, but she quickly learns it's hard to make friends while keeping half her life a secret.

And then Aria shows up. Aria, who knows exactly what to say and do to make Gabby feel better. Will she be able to help Gabby find her voice? And will Gabby still trust Aria when she finds out exactly what she is?

Think John Green for middle grade, with a touch of magic!

Children's Literature - Greta Holt
Gabby Torres and her new friend Aria are starting eighth grade in a brand new school. Gabby has come to the city because her older brother Marco is sick with the bad, a whispered term for cancer. Worrying about her brother, and finally giving up receiving attention from her mother, Gabby has lost touch with who she is. Aria encourages Gabby to make friends and try new things while still caring deeply about Marco who sits in the hospital waiting for an operation. Gabby and Aria take a week to try all the clubs offered at the school, and when Gabby shows that she has a beautiful voice, they settle on choir. Aria does not have a good voice, but she wants to help Gabby. Aria is an angel, yes an angel. She is trying to earn her first feather toward amassing a full set of wings. The story is realistic when it depicts the difficulties of trying to fit into a new school while carrying the weight of family sickness. The narrative shifts point of view from Aria to Gabby as chapters shift, and Aria’s chapters are witty; e.g., she can become invisible but it makes her off balance. The ease with which Gabby accepts the knowledge of Aria’s angelic mission seems a misstep, but the story has a good heart. It will appeal to young readers who must navigate middle school. Book one in the “Everyday Angel” series. Reviewer: Greta Holt; Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 3–7—Aria is young guardian angel on a mission to help three girls; once she does, she'll be able to gain her wings. Her first charge is Gabby Torres, who is relieved and anxious to be starting at a new school and hopes that she can shed her "girl with a sick brother" identity. The first in a series showcasing tweens with "everyday" conflicts, it will engage middle schoolers.
