Banana Nut Protein Shake

All of the flavors you love in a banana nut muffin are served up in this cold and creamy smoothie. Hemp hearts are the tender center of the hemp seed, featuring all of the essential amino acids necessary for building protein in the body. Unlike flax seeds, which you need to grind ahead of time to benefit from their full nutritional profile, hemp hearts can be enjoyed directly from the bag over a salad or blended seamlessly into a smoothie. Paired with frozen banana, raw walnuts, and a couple of handfuls of fresh spinach (don’t worry, you can’t taste it!), you can count on this delicious shake to leave you feeling full and satisfied all morning long.

1 cup Homemade Almond Milk (page 178)
2 tablespoons hemp hearts
Small handful of raw walnuts (about ¼ cup)
2 handfuls fresh baby spinach leaves
1 frozen banana
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1 handful ice cubes (optional)

Combine all of the ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.

NOTE: The addition of vanilla extract can make a smoothie taste truly gourmet, but unless otherwise labeled, it does contain a small amount of alcohol. Alcohol-free vanilla flavor is also widely available and can be used interchangeably in any recipe, if you prefer.

After losing over 20 pounds using the Hungry Chick Dieting Solution, I have embarked on a decision to get my entire family to eat better to live better. This book is one of the few that is helping me to do that. In this book, Gilmore encourages you to practice daily healthy habits and believes in eating whole foods (I.e., not eating unprocessed, refined-sugar free, chemical additive free) on a day to day basis – making a lifestyle change – rather than teetering on the extremes and cyclic nature of dieting. She encourages you to stop calorie counting; it “doesn’t take into account the quality of foods we’re consuming nor the body’s ability to digest natural foods versus processed ones.” Gilmore encourages you to read the labels, but also ask yourself a few questions: Where does the food come from? Is it in its natural state? How many ingredients does it contain and do you recognize those ingredients? Better yet, she says, select foods with no label at all. Overall, this book is a gem. If you are serious about living better because you are eating better, I’d also recommend that you buy a copy of Chef Jai Scovers’ books Conquer Your Kitchen and Simple, Healthy and Delicious. These books are not only amazing, but they have changed the way not only me, but how my entire family eats. Wait until you see the food storage charts. Buy them! Borrow them! Get them!

I am so happy to finally get this book. I have been following Megan’s blog for several years, and have loved trying many of her recipes, so having a book of her recipe’s at home is fantastic! I love lasagna, so I had to make the Zucchini Lasagna first, and it is so delicious, I don’t ever need another lasagna recipe.  My family loved it!  And I am already addicted to the Maple Pecan Granola, and the Double Chocolate Brownies are amazing!  Next, I want to try the Quinoa Mushroom Burgers.    What I have always loved about her recipes, besides the fact that they are healthy and delicious, is that the recipes she creates are easy to make, and the ingredients that she uses are either already in my pantry, or easy to find.   She creates recipes for healthier versions of foods that families like to eat!
