From the opener-yes, it's the Sly & the Family Stone classic-Mullen sets the tone for the entire album: fun, funky, and packing a timely message of unity. Everyday People offers dreamy ballads ("I Am"), soul-funk ("Bye Bye Brianna"), R&B ("Dancin' in the Rain"), and even some world-beat rhythms ("Gon' Be Free"). It's as ...

It's as musically uplifting as it is spiritually resonant: Mullen's main themes are unity, self-esteem, finding joy in God's gifts, and love of family. We've heard this message from Mullen before, but oddly she's one of the few in Christian music who make this kind of universality explicit in her work. Plus, her songs are so rich, and so innovatively delivered, that it's a delight to hear her, no matter what the subject matter.
