Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Jack, a wolf of sorts, lives happily alone in the hills, busy picking berries, making jam, knitting scarves. But sometimes he feels lonely. One winter night, a lost mouse named Walter stops by, and Jack invites him in. He makes him breakfast the next day and they make snowmen outside. Jack enjoys having a friend, and invites Walter to stay another night. Unfortunately Walter's snoring keeps Jack awake. And in the morning, he finds that Walter has made a mess of breakfast, and of his yarn. Walter tries to apologize, but Jack orders him to leave. Remembering their good time together, however, Jack asks Walter to stay. He has learned something about friendship. There's a soft, fuzzy, pastel quality to the cozy double-page scenes that make us see the wolf and mouse as friends as they project positive emotion. Perhaps there is a message for readers about what makes a friend. Note the jars of jam on the end pages. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—Jack, a wolf, lives alone in the hills. He spends his time making jam and knitting. He is content, but sometimes he does get lonely. One snowy night, Walter the mouse is lost and stumbles upon Jack's house, where he is invited to wait out the storm. The two have a great time together. The following night Jack sleeps poorly because his guest snores. He soon finds himself unreasonably angry and tells the mouse to leave. As Walter departs, Jack regretfully rethinks his decision, hurrying to invite Walter back because having a friend is worth the trouble. This simple story is rendered in bright oil pastels, with thoughtful background details that give the illustrations a cozy feel. A tale of friendship that will fit nicely into most collections.—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
