Publishers Weekly
Two titles extend the paper-over-board Kids' FAQs series: Everything Dolphin: What Kids Really Want to Know About Dolphins by Marty Crisp and Everything Reptile by Cherie Winner. Like the previous titles, children pose the questions (such as "How are dolphins different from porpoises?" and "Who is the most famous dolphin?") and brief paragraphs paired with close-up color photographs serve as answers. Children love dolphins. What's not to love? They always seem to be smiling, they play, they are very intelligent. Yet the more scientists study these marine mammals, the more they realize there is much to be learned. Crisp wanted to explore what kids want to know about dolphins. So he sat in on two talks by dolphin expert Dr. Kathleen Dudzinski —scientist-in-residence at Mystic Aquarium, Mystic, Connecticut—paying particular attention to questions children asked about dolphins. Crisp also visited swim-with-the-dolphins programs, talking to kids there. After more research visiting behind-the-scenes dolphin programs and consulting experts in The Nature Conservancy the author compiled thirty-five questions/chapters: If dolphins are mammals like we are, why do they live in the water? Do they breathe the same way we do? Why are dolphins always smiling? What sounds do dolphins make? How smart are dolphins? What are the rarest and most common dolphins? Can people ride dolphins? Is swimming with dolphins a good thing? And so on. Part of the "Kid's FAQs" series, the book features lively color photos of dolphins, many of which have people or children in them. It includes two full pages of resources, both books and web sites. This is a great book to hand to a young dolphin fan or include in a home, school or public library. 2004, NorthWord Press, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 3-5-These books provide kids with answers to common questions about various animals. Each chapter is headed with one or two queries (e.g., "How fast can dolphins swim, and how deep can they dive?") followed by one- or two-page answers. Enough information is provided to cover the basics, such as what the creatures look like and what they eat. There's not much species-specific material, but the answer to each question is detailed enough for most reports. Of the two, Reptile has less specific information, probably because it has a broader range of creatures to discuss, but it still makes a good introduction to the topic. Because the chapters are relatively short, the texts never seem overwhelming or intimidating. Lots of clear photos add appeal. Although neither volume has an index, children can easily access information through the tables of contents. With broad appeal for both browsers and researchers, these offerings make good additions to natural-history collections.-Arwen Marshall, Minneapolis Public Library Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
