Meet the Author

Mark Ellis is the author of forty novels, most of them under the "house name" of James Axler. He created the popular Outlanders science-fiction series and wrote Justice Machine, Death Hawk, Doc Savage, The Wild, Wild West, and H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu, among many other comic book and graphic novel series.

Melissa Martin Ellis served as the art director of Millennium Publications, a comic magazine publisher, designing such popular titles as Anne Rice's The Mummy, Doc Savage, and Nosferatu: Plague of Terror.

This book provides a good high-level overview of the process of creating graphic novels / comics, including coverage of some historical background; the unique qualities and challenges of the genre; additional resources, many of them online; and a fairly detailed description of each part of the process and the role of the person doing it. However, the book does not present well in Nook reader format. The illustrations only display in black-and-white, really a shame considering that several of them depict the use of coloring techniques and palettes. I imagine the original book has call-out paragraphs (E-Facts and E-Questions) interspersed with the narrative in an interesting and eye-catching style, but these appear thrown in randomly in the Nook format and are in all capital letters, which I find hard to read. Finally, there are typos, lots of them. I'm guessing this has to do with the conversion of the hard copy book to electronic format, since it sometimes substitutes Ps for Ds, for example, and this is worse in the call-out sections. This is a good book for acquainting yourself with this medium, although to be truly descriptive, I would have titled it "The Everything Guide to CREATING Graphic Novels," since there is at least the same amount of coverage given to the visual art side as the story-writing side, if not more. Since I bought it for the story-telling aspect of the medium, that was a little misleading. And if I had to do it again, I would definitely buy this book in hard copy to get the benefit of the layout and the color illustrations. It just doesn't play well on the Nook.
