Overview

Few multi-platinum bands have flaunted more musical facets in public over the past decade than this Southern California combo, which used their ska-punk roots as a stepping-stone to the sort of across-the-board pop success that'd do the Jackson family proud. This 17-track collection may cover even more ground than last year's Singles collection, as it emphasizes offbeat ditties like the holiday moshpit favorite "Oi to the World" and the coquettish "I Throw My Toys Around," on which Gwen Stefani stakes her claim to the modern-day torch song throne. Everything in Time is peppered with seven previously unreleased songs, including two different versions of the disc's ostensible title track, an intimate acoustic rendition subtitled "Los Angeles" and a more ornately orchestrated "London" version. While that attests to the band's deftness with a slick ballad, there's also plenty of energy present in songs like the bass-heavy "A Real Love Survives," which boasts a guest rap by British MC Ms. Dynamite, and the serpentine "New Friend," which is buoyed by one of Stefani's sexier vocal turns. Consider this archive raid to be one of the rare instances where throwing in everything including the kitchen sink turns out to be a great idea.
