A Portrait of an American Icon

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis-better known as Jackie O. to the tabloids, "the deb" to the Kennedy clan, and the 35th First Lady to historians-is easily one of the most recognizable Presidential wives. She remains the model of the proper American woman. But what was Jackie O. hiding behind those big, dark shades?

From her New York society upbringing to her time in the White House to her days spent as a Doubleday editor, this is the ultimate biography of a woman everyone recognized but few knew. Did you know that:

  • Her first job was as the "Inquiring Camera Girl" for the Washington Times-Herald?
  • Before she started dating Jack Kennedy, she hadn't even voted in a national election?
  • She was the only family member strong enough to remove Robert Kennedy from life-support measures after he was shot?
  • She asked Rose Kennedy for her blessing before she married Aristotle Onassis?

She was American royalty and is now an American icon. The Everything Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Book delivers everything you always wanted to know about this captivating woman.

This book presents lots of facts in a relatively organized manner. There were a few paragraphs and sections that made me wonder why they were placed where they were, but on the whole it seemed coherent. If all you are looking for is information and don't care much about presentation, you will not mind this book at all. However , I found the writing style to be choppy and amateurish, and this really detracted from my enjoyment of the book. It reminded me somewhat of a high school research project in terms of style. On the whole, I think that if you wanted to read about Jackie O., there are better choices out there.

I got in on a *fabulous* deal, when I saw this offered for FREE. I've been enjoying it very much. Anything on Jackie is always a treat, and quite fascinating, for sure. I appreciate the pictures. I've shared this with my mother, as she is a Kennedy aficionado as well, and even my little niece liked it. Thanks very much, B & N and the publisher for offering this selection for free, for whatever small window of time that it was. :-)

I've read a few JKO bios, this was not bad. I liked the detailed background of both the Bouviers and the Kennedys. Is worth reading if you are interested in her.
