Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
This text was developed in collaboration with the United Federation of Teachers Dial-A-Teacher program. The table of contents is presented in outline form and offers an extensive overview of American history. From the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the conclusion of World War II and the Cold War, information is offered in a concise, brief manner and in easily understandable language for the recommended age group. The material covering the Civil War includes maps and graphs that introduce the division of the states and the dates of secession, with the facing page offering causes of the Civil War and a chart of the Confederate government. The two pages following give a chronology of the war. All of the pages are color-coded for the period under discussion, and the pages incorporate a great deal of color, graphics, and charts to break up the text. This book could be used to enrich a history curriculum up through the middle school grades. It is also an excellent review for parents wishing to assist their children in studying this period of history.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-As their titles indicate, these books are written specifically to help children complete their homework assignments. Therefore, they are best used as circulating materials and not as reference books. None of the material is presented in-depth and the books aren't meant to be used for reports, but in terms of answering specific questions, introducing concepts, or providing simple explanations they are competently done. All three volumes have thorough tables of contents that are easy to use; large print size and lots of white space; numerous charts, maps, and graphs; and color-coded sound bites of information. Each page has a handy sidebar that indicates what can be found and thus provides a shortcut for someone leafing through in search of an answer. The indexes are also complete. American History is enriched with colorful graphics and archival photos. Answers to the most commonly asked homework questions abound, and they are easily accessible and clearly stated.-Suzanne Hawley, Laurel Oak Elementary School, Naples, FL
