Everything You Need to Know about Rheumatic Fever

Everything You Need to Know about Rheumatic Fever

by Phillip Margulies

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-This overview covers the basics of the disease, from symptoms to treatment. Beginning with a brief history, Margulies goes on to explain how scientists determined that its cause was the streptococcus bacteria. Once Fleming developed penicillin, strep throat was easily cured and the incidence of rheumatic fever dropped sharply. The text is well written and organized, and includes information on research into vaccines and genetic testing, and new worries about the possibility of new strains of bacteria that are hard to detect and resistant to antibiotics. The photos are mostly decorative and not much help, especially one that is said to show the narrowing of a heart valve in an indecipherable color photo of a heart. Strictly for reports.-Christine A.
