Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-A brief overview of the criminal justice system and prison life is followed by a short exploration of some issues faced by children of prisoners. Fictionalized examples in each chapter illustrate realistic family situations. Black-and-white photographs are included. Grim realities are presented with no sugar coating, and the tone is appropriately nonjudgmental. Suggestions for obtaining outside help appear throughout the book. Although the message is that children should not feel guilty or responsible for crimes their parents may have committed, there is too little emphasis placed on positive steps that they might take to help them lead a fulfilling life. After reading the depressing recitation of facts here, readers whose parents are incarcerated will find little encouragement.-Jacqueline Rose, Lake Oswego Public Library, OR
