Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Carol Boswell, Ed.D.(Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book, a continuing education activity for nurses, addresses the ideas of effective utilization of evidence-based advance directives primarily in an acute care setting. The elements presented could be applied to other settings.
Purpose: Learning objectives are listed for the book; a test and evaluation form at the end demonstrates the continuing education focus of the book.
Audience: The audience is registered nurses, but the information is provided at a level such that other healthcare providers could benefit from book. The author is a lawyer, and thus a credible authority.
Features: All aspects of advance directives are presented. Many end-of-life issues are presented to provide a context for the discussion. Throughout the text, the author has placed "Nursing Implications" within boxes to highlight important information. The appearance of the book is rather dull due to the lack of illustrations and coloration.
Assessment: The information provided in this book is right on track. The quiz that is included for nurses to seek continuing education hours is functional. The information is concisely laid out to allow for quick and easy use of the material and the depth of the material presented is appropriate.
