Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Surya M Artham, MD, MPH (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This pocket-sized handbook, written by respected authorities, covers all the important clinical trials in cardiovascular medicine. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The authors summarize clinical trials evaluating the pharmacologic agents, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions used in heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, and arrhythmias.
Audience: This book is intended for medical students, residents, clinical and research fellows, and cardiovascular specialists.
Features: It covers all the major clinical trials and meta-analyses in preventive cardiology, acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Each chapter starts with an overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and easy to understand tables of ACC/AHA guideline summaries. Each clinical trial and meta-analysis is well summarized in a systematic fashion, including the design, purpose, population, treatment, results, and comment.
Assessment: With so much data accumulating, it is essential to have a handbook like this dedicated to clinical trials. This new edition, updated with the latest clinical trials, is a welcome replacement for the old edition.
