Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“This is a good book for lay caregivers and supportpersonnel training to provide care, as it includes many options forconsideration.”  (Doody’s, 10 August2012)
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: Part of the Evidence-Based Medicine series, this book explores the medical, nursing, and social aspects of caring for geriatric patients.
Purpose: It seeks to review the evidence in caring for the geriatric population around the world.
Audience: The audience is the wide range of clinicians, support personnel, and caregivers who wish to further the ideals of caring for the elderly. The contributors are clinicians in Canada and, understandably, the tendency is to discuss the Canadian population.
Features: The book starts by outlining the underlying problems of function and frailty in the elderly, then discusses computer-based clinical decision support systems, simplifying medicines, addressing some common physical complaints, and addressing confusion and cognitive decline. Although there are many references, the drawback is that they are not evaluated for their outcomes. This book is available as a full-text online version mirroring the print version through the Wiley-Blackwell website.
Assessment: This is a good book for lay caregivers and support personnel training to provide care, as it includes many options for consideration.
