More About This Textbook
Overview
EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE is the bible of EBM. Known as the ultimate authority on the subject, this text was written by the foremost experts in the field. Instead of basing medical decisions on tradition, this resource teaches doctors how to integrate individual clinical expertise with the available external evidence from systematic research to provide patients with the best possible care. Readers will be taught how to ask, translate, critically appraise, and integrate clinical questions. The book is packaged with a FREE CD-ROM containing extended descriptions and sample web pages of several current evidence sources.
Spanish version also available, ISBN: 84-8174-511-1
The book contains two-color illustrations.
Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Donald R. Frey, MD(Creighton University Medical Center)Description: This book is a presentation of the concept of evidence-based medicine (EBM) to both practicing clinicians and medical educators. This second edition is well equipped with numerous statistical tables, algorithms, and an accompanying CD-ROM to present EBM concepts to learners at all levels.
Purpose: The authors seek to present EBM in a user-friendly fashion, with strong references to clinical epidemiology. Given the flurry of information and misinformation on EBM, inclusion of epidemiology concepts in the discussion is one of the real strengths of this book.
Audience: Although written expressly for busy clinicians, students and residents will find the book extremely useful. Non-physician providers who wish to stay abreast of EBM concepts will likewise find the text quite readable. The five authors come from a wide array of clinical backgrounds, and all share a strong interest in evidence-based medicine. This diversity in approach is another strength.
Features: A full array of EBM concepts are covered as related to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and education. Mathematical epidemiologic concepts are presented in a non-threatening fashion, and the entire approach is Socratic. Thought-provoking questions are posed throughout the text, guiding the reader through important issues. The text is well referenced, tables are clear and easy to understand, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains numerous case studies. A related website is included for regular updated information.
Assessment: This second edition is a concise introduction to the concepts of evidence-based medicine. The authors do an excellent job of covering the "middle ground" between an expanded monograph and more lengthy epidemiologic texts. The book is well written, easy to understand, and quite portable. Access to website updates makes new information constantly available. Virtually all practitioners will find this text useful on an ongoing basis.
